Reviewing data on sexual harassment charges

On Behalf of Clapp, Peterson, Tiemessen, Thorsness LLC | Apr 22, 2022 | Employment Law |

Whether you run a large corporation or own a small business, it is vital to understand the potential consequences of sexual harassment allegations. For example, a sexual harassment suit could destroy your business’ reputation, creating long-term challenges that drive customers away and shatter crucial partnerships. Preventing sexual harassment is vital, but some businesses face serious repercussions over false sexual harassment accusations, which underlines the importance of thoroughly reviewing the details of a case and gathering evidence.

In addition, you should go over statistics on sexual harassment charges in order to develop a better idea of how prevalent these cases are and some of the characteristics of sexual harassment claims.

Statistics on sexual harassment claims in recent years

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission published data on sexual harassment claims from the fiscal years 2010 through 2021. During the fiscal year 2021, people filed more than 5,500 sexual harassment with the EEOC, compared to 7,944 over the course of the fiscal year 2010. In the fiscal year 2020, people filed over 6,500 sexual harassment claims. In the fiscal year 2021, males accounted for 16.3% of the total sexual harassment charge filings.

Those who filed sexual harassment charges in the fiscal year 2021 received $61.6 million in monetary benefits, compared to $41.2 million during the fiscal year 2010.

Data on sex-based harassment claims

In the fiscal year 2021, people filed more than 10,000 sex-based harassment claims with the EEOC, compared to 11,497 in the fiscal year 2020 and 12,695 in the fiscal year 2010. If your firm is struggling with allegations of sexual harassment or sex-based harassment, make sure you carefully examine your options and take the smartest approach, especially with so much at stake.
